Frequently Asked Questions

What is Assisted Living?
It is a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care designed to respond to the individual needs of those who need help with activities of daily living, but do not need the skilled medical care provided in a nursing home. It promotes maximum independence and dignity for each resident by living in your own apartment and "aging in place." There are several different levels of care available. We foster independence and encourage family participation as much as possible.

New Residents
Less is better! Many families and friends experience mixed emotions when moving a loved one in a Residential Community. Emotions may range from feelings of relief and security to guilt and fear. Some try to compensate by bringing many things into the resident’s new room. This is not always a good idea.

What are Visiting Hours?
You may visit anytime, just as you would have before, being respectful of the other residents. It is usually better to visit after 10:00 am as the early morning hours are focused on assisting residents in getting the day started, eating breakfast and other associated tasks and before 7:00 pm as your love one may need assistant getting ready to bed.

What is your caregiver to resident ratio?
Our caregiver to resident ratio varies depending on the number of residents, the level of care each of those residents requires, and the time of day. Minerva Retirement home meets or exceeds industry standards for staffing ratios.

Can the residents go outside?
A nice garden is available to residents during the daytime hours. Depending upon the care needs of a resident, they may go outside individually or in a small group to enjoy the view and, the sunshine of beautiful south Florida. Caregivers monitor who is outside to insure that security and assistance requirements are maintained. “ Security First”

How do you keep residents stimulated and busy?
We learn as much as we can about each residents background, interests and needs so that we can encourage a level of activity and social life that is appropriate to their particular situation. An activity program is organized each month and typically includes music, games and showing of old movies or television programs. For the more active senior, we have many off site programs.

Is the rent tax deductible?
Yes, the rent is tax deductible. A portion of the rent you pay Minerva Retirement Home should be tax deductible. Have your tax advisor review the Internal Revenue Service Publication 502 (2000) "Medical and Dental Expenses".
